New York state filed a quarter of a billion dollar fraud lawsuit against H&R Block Wendesday. New York’s Attorney General charges that the company illegally pushed customers into buying an IRA that was guaranteed to lose money for nearly all investors. H&R Block countered that its IRA, while nearly guaranteed to lose money for almost all investors, represented a solid investment. source

Six in clinical drug trial seriously ill

Six men in a clinical trial of an anti-inflammatory drug are hospitalized after having severe reactions to the medication. Two of the patients are in critical condition after taking the medication. The drug apparently caused a serious inflammatory response by the body and organs. source

Senator wants to ban bird poop in cattle feed

U.S. Senator Tom Harkin told regulators Tuesday that bird poop should be banned from cattle feed because it may spread mad cow disease. Harkin is concerned that feeding cow parts to poultry and poultry feces to cows might raise the chance of spreading the disease. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is planning on publishing new rules allowing the bird poop meals for cattle to continue. source

State trooper shoots man with cerebal palsy for not raising his hands

An Arkansas state trooper shot and killed a mentally handicapped man with cerebral palsy after the man did not comply with orders to show his hands. The trooper had mistaken the man with a prison escapee when he shot the 21-year-old. Arkansas State Police say nothing in the victim’s actions suggested he wasn’t a prison escapee. source

3-year-old shoots mom in the knee

A 3-year-old Minnesota boy shot his mother in the knee with a gun he found under a couch cushion. It was the second time the boy had handled the gun. The first time the child picked up the gun, his mother took it away and removed the bullets, but forgot to remove the bullet in the chamber. The mother then put the weapon back on the couch. source
