Thieves steal 130 light poles in Baltimore

Thieves, sometimes disguised as utility crews, have stolen 130 light poles in Baltimore. The 30-feet-tall 250 are being targeted because the aluminum they’re made from is worth up to 35 cents per pound as scrap metal.

Bookstore mobbed by Bea Arthur fans

A New York Barnes and Noble was mobbed Thursday by thousands of fans who arrived to meet the cast of The Golden Girls. Bea Arthur, Betty White, and Rue McClanahan were on hand to greet fans sign the newly released DVD set of their television show. The store’s 400 copies of the program quickly sold out and it took 12 staffers and security guards to control the mob.

World’s ugliest dog dies at 14

Sam, holder of the world’s ugliest dog title, has died at the age of 14. Sam’s owner was reluctant to adopt the dog six years ago but fell in love with the pooch. Her boyfriend at the time left her because the dog was so repulsive.

Woman arrested for onion ring emergency call

A Louisiana woman phoned 911 Wednesday night to report that she had been served cold onion rings. She told police the food was cold when she received it and the attendant refused to replace it with a new order. The woman was arrested and faces a December court date for misuse of the 911 system.

Artist Judi Werthein is giving away special $200 running shoes in Mexico that are designed to help the runner cross the border into the United States. Each pair is equipped with a compass, a map of the area, and tiny Mexican flag stitched onto the back.
