A 24-year-old Kent, Washington, man was killed Sunday when a lava lamp exploded, sending a shard of glass into his heart. Police said the man put the lamp on a hot stovetop, causing it to explode. The death has been ruled an accident.

A Kansas man was sent to jail Wednesday morning after a judge suspected him of being intoxicated during a court hearing where he was to be sentenced on two separate convictions of felony DUI. The defendant, who had been out on bond awaiting the hearing, will stay in the Harvey County Detention Center until Thursday, when a new sentencing date was set.

A man accidentally shot himself in the face while robbing a deli in the South Bronx. He was arrested and taken to Lincoln Medical Center in stable condition. Charges against the suspect are pending.

A bridge in Indonesia may soon collapse because too many people are fond of urinating on one of its steel pillars, corroding the structure. The bridge has begun to lean at an angle and rocks slightly in heavy traffic. An official stated that the acidic urine’s corrosive forces could lead to an eventual collapse.

A customer from Osaka purchased a platinum, diamond-studded figurine of Hello Kitty for the equivalent of $102,000 by a department store in a Japanese department store. The 1.6 inch tall figurine is dressed in a queen’s outfit and studded with 250 diamonds to celebrate the 30th birthday of the mouthless white cat.

Police in Minnesota are looking for a giant blow-up figure of SpongeBob SquarePants swiped from a Burger King. They’ve found a ransom note which starts off: “We have SpongeBob.” It then demands, “Give us ten Crabby Patties, fries and milkshakes.” The ransom note is signed by SpongeBob’s nemesis, Plankton. A postscript reads: “Patrick is next.”
