Pennsylvania grocers struck by vanilla thieves
Some Pennsylvania grocery stores have removed vanilla extract from their shelves to prevent thieves from stealing it apparently for its alcohol content. Customers at Weis Markets and Boyer’s Food Market in Berwick have to ask for the extract at the customer service desks. Pure vanilla extract must be at least 35 percent ethyl alcohol, which translates to 70-proof.
