Wheelchair fire hazard sparks recall
Wheelchair maker Invacare settled a lawsuit in August for more than $7 million after defective wiring allegedly caused a wheelchair fire that burned a paralyzed elderly woman.
Invacare initially didn’t widely publicize its recall of electric wheelchairs. The recall was expanded amid lawsuits claiming unsafe wiring and fire hazards. The recall, nearly complete, covered all electric wheelchairs the company made between 1988 and June 2000.
