Prince Charles had harsh words for modern skyscrapers recently. Attacking the crappy pieces of “art” at the bottom of many of these buildings, he said: “Let’s have no more of the left-over spaces that so often masquerade as public amenity - what (novelist) Tom Wolfe entertainingly described as ‘a turd in every plaza’. The Prince of Wales would like to see the bottom floors occupied by useful public amenities such as shops and restaurants.
