Heroic officer was imposter
A high-speed chase in Texas was assisted by a man who identified himself as off-duty trooper Sergeant Charles Cavanaugh. At one point he even jumped out of his car and ran up to the suspect with his gun drawn. The person fleeing police was eventually shot by another officer.
Afterwards, efforts to locate Sergeant Cavanaugh resulted in the discovery that there is no state trooper by that name.
