Judge allows hemp hats
Superior Court Judge Thomas Lofchik has allowed two Church of the Universe clerics to wear their colourful hemp-woven hats in his Hamilton, Canada, court because it is the “regalia of their religion”. He will also adress the men, Micheal J. Baldasaro and Walter A. Tucker, as “reverends”. The pair are acting as their own lawyers in a lawsuit against the owners of a shopping mall. They claim mall security assaulted and humiliated when they were detained on November 25, 2000.
At the juror selection yesterday, several prospective jurors were sternly instructed to remove their (presumably non-hemp) hats by court attendants.
