Australian army to kill 15,000 kangaroos
15,000 kangaroos on an army base in Australia are scheduled to be shot to death to keep them from starving. The Austalian Defense Department has hired nine shooters to reduce the kangaroo population at the Puckapunayl army base in Victoria.
Inspectors from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will be on hand to observe the event. The animals will be each receive a gunshot in the head, and their bodies buried in mass graves on the base.
The population of kangaroos on the base shot up from 45,000 in 1999 to more than 80,000 today after a herd of sheep was removed from the area.
