Phoenix Zoo starves porcupine to death
An 8-year-old porcupine named Tinkerbell was put on a diet at the Phoenix Zoo but no one remembered take her off the diet and she starved to death. Tinkerbell was a weighty 12 pounds and zookeepers decided to place her on a diet with a target weight of 11 pounds. When she died of malnutrition her weight was 8 pounds.
The United States Department of Agriculture is investigating the zoo for possible violation of the federal Animal Welfare Act, which ensures adequate animal treatment and veterinary care.
