Looters take Baghdad zoo animals for food
The number of animals in the Baghdad zoo dropped from around 400 before the Iraq war to just 50 largely because looters stole the animals to use as food or to sell. Looters also took equipment and supplies needed to care for the animals making their care even more difficult.
